Eriks Abzinovs: Interview with 3D artist

Hi everyone! We continue series of short interviews with the best artists from Hum3D competitions.

Eriks Abzinovs, author of the « H-Truck », will answer six questions and give us a look behind the scenes of his work.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. What do you do and how did you become a 3D artist?

I used to do photography however once Covid -19 Struck all my projects and work died down. I wanted to pick up a side hobby that would still allow me to be creative. Hence, I started doing 3D. A huge part of that was Paul Birman who motivated me to get into cars especially.

What was the workflow behind your latest challenge image? Where did the idea come from?

I always struggle to do SCIFI-themed renders. But for me was the story that I always like to deliver with such renders. For this particular render, I did not want to make just a Flying car. Idea was to show you a glimpse of your everyday city worker that faces his daily challenges in the environment with the help of his trusty car. The background script was actually way longer but I needed to chop it down as I can easily get lost when comes to writing a background story.

What challenges did the image creation? Did you learn something new?

Yes. with each challenge I take I explore new ways of creating or telling about the thing/s. I explored and learned new ways how to incorporate details in the environment and in the hero model.

How often do you do personal projects and keep your portfolio up-to-date? Which one is your favorite?

I try to push myself and learn to be more proficient and more adaptive. For example my most recent personal project « THE ELEMENT » is more of a study + modeling experience of the full call starting from the chassis and all the way down to the internals (I am not an engineer nor do I hold an engineering background) so I have to fair bit of research of each component. What it is for? What deal does it have in the grand total? Why is it made in this particular way? ETC.

What or who inspires you today? Are you a member of any art communities? Any favorite hashtags you check on a daily basis?

My inspiration comes from the shared joy of making things in a digital environment. overcoming challenges and setting goals. A huge source of inspiration for me was Paul Birman. Who set my path towards automotive work. However, I also look at various other CG artists and real-world designs.

Please tell us your five short tips for creating 3D art.

  1. – Leave your Comfort Zone. Do not sit just in your little square. Get out of the box. Ripp it apart.

  2. – Experiment. Try and explore different things (who knows what will you discover).

  3. – Do not be afraid to fail and learn from failures.

  4. – Patience. Rome was not built in one day.

  5. – Embrace the changes. In life, you will face a lot of unsettling changes. Do not be afraid of them.
