The M1 Abrams is a 3rd-gen American main battle tank named after General Creighton Abrams, designed by Chrysler Defense. One of the heaviest tanks in service, weighing nearly 68 short tons, it features a multi-fuel turbine engine, advanced Chobham composite armor, computerized fire control, separate ammo storage, and NBC protection. Early models were armed with a licensed Royal Ordnance L7 105mm cannon, while later versions have a licensed Rheinmetall L/44 120mm cannon. The M1 Abrams evolved from the failed MBT-70 project, intended to replace the aging M60 tank. There are 3 main versions: M1, M1A1, and M1A2, each with improved armament, protection, and electronics. The M1 Abrams entered service in 1980, serving as the U.S. Army's main battle tank, and was used by the USMC. It has been exported and used by armies in Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Poland, and Iraq. The Abrams saw combat in the Persian Gulf War and both the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.
