– Tell us a little bit about yourself. What do you do and how did you become a 3D artist?

Hello, my name is Volodymyr Borovkov. I was born in Kirovohrad, Ukraine and now I live in Germany for 20 years.

After I made a bachelor’s degree in computer science and working as a software developer for a while without fun, I decided to come back to my 3d modeling hobby and made this to my main job.
I started learning 3D myself a long time ago. As I am a big F1 fan, I tried to model Formula One cars from the beginning and gain more experience in modeling and rendering. Here is my portfolio.

– What’s your favorite aspect of creating 3D art? Is there something you specialize in and enjoy the most?

I enjoy every aspect of creating 3D art. Searching for references, modeling, texturing, lighting, rendering, and post-production :)

– What or who inspires you today? Are you a member of any art communities? Any favorite hashtags you check on a daily basis?

Well, I am still aspired by Formula 1 in general. I love discovering new cars from the 90s, 80s or even 70s, their technical advantages, design, liveries and backstories. I am also aspired by the “Gods” of Artstation^^ I’ve studied a lot of artworks there, for example how other Artists use light in their scene, composition, storytelling etc. and I check every day for more awesome artworks.

– Please tell us your five short tips for creating 3D art.

  1. – Be patient. Just start the work and continue step by step every day until you finish.

  2. – Study every small detail about your next work in the early stage before it’s too late to change things.

  3. – Do what you like the most and get best in it.

  4. – Judge yourself very hard about the final artwork and get some feedback from people who understand what you are trying to do.

  5. – Try to make your next art better than the previous one. Improve your skills every day. Never stop learning new things!

– Could you please show us any images from the latest work process with a short description. Where did the idea come from? Did you learn something new?

Creating of a f1 car 3d model

Starting with the main body, with the nose to be precise, and moving forward until the whole body is covered, then adding tires, suspensions and spoilers to the car. And in the next iteration adding more details to the body, tires and wings.

The next challenge was to build a scene around the car:

scene around a car

Originally I wanted to make a completely wet and rainy scene, but the image was too flat so I put a sun as a light source to the scene. And I learned a lot during this process like sun position/direction how it changes the mood of the image by producing shadows, reflection and contrast. And also I learned how to do this with Octane Standalone Application as I was very new to this rendering engine.

– Which of your designs/part of scene/model are you most like and why?

At this moment I like these two images the most as they were the latest ones. But my opinion could change in a few months again as I see more room for improvement.
