Welcome to the Ford GT40 Mk. IV. “Why’s this a legend?” You may ask, and all I can say is that you are looking at the winner of the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans. This win marked the second in a 4-time consecutive win streak at this race. The Mark IV was the most advanced version of the classic, well-known GT40 series, although the other versions, especially the Mark I, are more commonly known. This makes the Mk. IV the dark horse of Ford’s Le Mans history. It beat out fierce competitors such as the Ferrari 330 P4, the Porsche 907, and the Chevrolet Corvette C2. For these obvious reasons, this car is a legend among legends, to everyone who sees it, but for me, this car has a story. I grew up as a kid who cared about nothing else but cars, driving cars, and car parts. Cars to me were the most important thing in the entire world, and so there were very few that I held dear. The ones I could say in my wise 8-year old mind were true legends, and deserved to be remembered. The very first car in this list was the GT40 you see above. Its revolutionary design, its raw power, and the indescribable aesthetics of a true pure bred race car gravitated me towards it. I couldn’t imagine a more beautiful car than the GT40, and among the various variants, the Mk. IV was always the most elegant. It is evident that this car doesn’t just serve as a legend to me, but the entire world of racing, and indeed cars. Take the popular racing game, Gran Turismo 5 for example. This car was featured in GT5, being one of the most expensive vehicles in the entire list of 1000+ cars. Its sweeping curves and faithful 7.0L V8 meant it won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but also won a place in the hearts of every person who cares about racing, especially me.
