One of Australia’s quintessential pieces of modernist architecture is the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV International) designed by Sir Roy Grounds, which opened in Melbourne in 1968. I decided to focus the Hum3D Without Borders Visualization Challenge on a key space within the NGV International, the Great Hall.
The Great Hall has the largest stained-glass ceiling in the world, designed by the artist Leonard French, who was prophesized to ‘create the heavens.’ This translated into a magnificent Persian Rug of Light that measures approximately 15 metres wide by 51 metres long, embedded with over 10,000 pieces of hand-cut stained-glass fragments in more than 50 different colours, meticulously placed into a mosaic array that gracefully casts a playful kaleidoscope of coloured light onto the walls and floor below.
The Great Hall is a truly grandeur space and a hidden gem literally and figuratively; so, lie down, relax, and bathe in its beauty.
